David Sherman, the founder of the firm, was born and raised in southern New Jersey, an area steeped in Native American and colonial history. Inspired by the independent thinking and courage of this Native American tribe, David chose to name his firm Cohanzick Management.

Prior to the arrival of Europeans, native Americans inhabited an area on the banks of the Cohansey River in New Jersey. The Cohanzicks, as they were known, are ancestors of the Nanticoke and Lenape families, which remain in the area of their ancient homeland to the present day. In the mid-17th century, the tribal nation signed a land grant resolving conflicts with the new settlers. Interestingly, the Chief of the Cohanzicks did not participate and the name "Cohanzick" is believed to mean "that which is taken out." In June of 1995, tribal elders and citizens fulfilled their ancestral charge; reclaiming 28 acres of land to be set aside as "Sacred."

Cohanzick Management, LLC was established in August 1996 by David Sherman and became an SEC Registered Investment Advisor in April 2009. As of 2/29/24, assets under management for Cohanzick and affiliates was in excess of $2.7 billion.
Investment Focus
The firm’s investment strategies primarily focus on high yield, investment grade, and opportunistic corporate credit, as well as event-driven and value equities. Current strategies employed by Cohanzick and affiliates include ultra short-term high yield, low duration high yield, and credit opportunities including high yield and investment grade corporate debt, stressed debt, distressed securities, tax exempt debt, event-driven and value equities.

The firm has 5 employees, 3 investment and 2 operations professionals. All members of the investment team with portfolio management responsibilities have at least 20 years of industry experience. Each senior member of the operations team has at least 10 years of experience.
